Head Coach John Gordon
2011 Wrestling USA Magazine National Coach of the Year
 
Head Wrestling Coach and Athletic Director John Gordon begins his third season at the helm of the Saints wrestling program after serving as the head coach at Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, PA where he led the Blue Knights wrestling team from 2002-10. In the span of his tenure at Seminary, Gordon developed the program into a national powerhouse- finishing second to perennial prep wrestling champions Blair Academy three out of the last four years at National Preps Tournament.  He also led Wyoming Seminary to four straight Pennsylvania Prep Championships while developing numerous state champions, Prep National Champions, All-Americans, and some of the brightest collegiate recruits in the US. Coach Gordon holds a USA Wrestling Bronze coaching certification and coached the Pennsylvania Cadet and Junior National teams while at Seminary. Gordon serves as the Director of Athletics at St. Christopher's, overseeing all of the Saints' athletic programs, events, and facilities. 2011-12 Season: Coach Gordon continued to push the Saints to another successful season, leading the Saints to their 11th straight Virginia Prep League and VISAA State titles and an 11th place finish at the National Prep Tournament. The schedule strength, hard work in the practice room and commitment to excellence proved to be the deciding factor in the success of the Saints wrestling program. Three of his grapplers: William Kelly, Robert Janis, and Marshall Hollerith earned All-American status at the National Prep tournament, while Kelly, Janis, and Quent Alcorn all won individual VISAA State titles.  2010-11 Season: Gordon spearheaded St. Christopher's continued dominance over private school wrestling in Virginia, guiding the Saints to their 10th consecutive Virginia Prep League and VISAA State titles. Three of his pupils: Robert Janis, David Wesley, and Quent Alcorn won state titles. Janis, Wesley and Trey Tarr earned All-American status for Coach Gordon helping to lead the Saints to a top 20 finish at Nationals. In addition, Gordon was named Wrestling USA magazine's National Coach of the Year for 2011- the first coach from Virginia to earn the honor.
Ross Gitomer

2012 National Wrestling Coaches Association- Virginia Assistant Coach of the Year


Gitomer, a 2010 graduate of the University of Virginia begins his second year as an assistant coach at St. Christopher's. Gitomer is very active in the Virginia Wrestling Association (VAWA) serving as the organization's Cadet Division Director and helped coach Team Virginia at both the Cadet National Duals and at the Cadet/Junior Nationals in 2012. He competed at 125 lbs. for the Cavaliers and was a two-time NCAA tournament qualifier for head coach Steve Garland. Gitomer was the 2008 ACC tournament champion and ended his career with a 94-48 record. He wrestled for Jeff Buxton at Blair Academy and was a National Preps Champion for the Bucs. Gitomer will teach math at St. Christopher's and brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and tremendous energy to the program.

Billy Abbott
Assistant Coach Billy Abbot has been associated with St. Christopher's wrestling for many years. This season, he will be working primarily with Coach Sica with the JV program, but he is always present at the varsity events. Coach Abbot is a tremendous scholar of wrestling, with his many years involved in the sport, serving as the head wrestling coach at Chesterfield County's Monacan HS for numerous years. He serves as the Dean's of Students in the Upper School and is a History teacher at St. Christopher's.
Rob Prebish
Assistant Coach Rob Prebish begins his fifth year at St. Christopher's after spending seven years at Massaponax High School in Fredericksburg, VA where he was the head coach. He helped develop the wrestling program at Massaponax into a formidable team, producing numerous State tournament place winners and qualifiers. Prebish is also one of the Greco Roman coaches for the VA Wrestling Association participating in the Cadet National Duals and on the coaching staff for Team Virginia's Cadet and Junior National teams. He has ten years of experience as a head wrestling coach at the high school level and will work with the lightweight wrestlers In 2008, he was the head coach of the USA team that won the Greco Roman tournament at the FILA Junior Pan American Championships in Cuenca, Ecuador.
Matt Erwin

Assitant Coach Erwin begins his fourth year on the St. Christopher's staff, after spending time at Benedictine HS where he was the head wrestling coach. Erwin was an extremely successful college wrestling qualifying for the NCAA Tournament three times and winning the Southern Conference Tournament for VMI. Erwin fashioned  a career record of 109-40 as a Keydet. He was a multiple-time state place winner in high school, competing for national power St. Paris- Graham HS in Ohio. His younger brother Dave, wrestled at Penn State. Erwin will work primarily with the upper weight wrestlers at St. Christopher's and is a much welcomed addition to the coaching staff.

David Erwin
Assistant Coach David Erwin begins his third year on the St. Christopher's coaching staff after a successfull collegiate career at Penn State, where he capped off his senior year by reaching the NCAA tournament for the Nittany Lions. Erwin is the younger brother of St. Christopher's assistant coach Matt Erwin and will bring plenty of experience to the staff. He was a two-time Ohio State champion for St. Paris Graham HS. Erwin was the number one ranked recruit in the US as a high school senior for coach Jeff Jordan. The wrestling program is excited to have David Erwin on staff to help continue the tradition of success.
Jonathan Pope
Jonathan Pope begins his second year on the St. Christopher's coaching staff, fitting in workouts when he can steal time away from his full time job with New Market Corporation. He also joins Coach Matt Erwin as the second Saints coach with a VMI connection, having graduated from the Institute in 2011. Pope was a Southern Conference place winner for the Keydets and was an Alabama high school state champion for Hoover HS. Pope is an outstanding clinician and will work with the lightweight wrestlers.
Owen Duffy
Coach Duffy begins his second full year as an assistant for the Saints. Duffy is a 2011 graduate of the University of Maryland where he competed for the Terps at 285 lbs. His primary focus is to work with the upper weight and heavy weight wrestlers. Duffy was a National Prep All-American and two-time state place winner in high school for Loyola Blakefield High School in Baltimore, Maryland. He is presently a graduate student at VCU.

Middle School Coaches

Charlie Hudson

Charlie Hudson is in his fifth year on the staff at St. Christopher's, primarily in charge of the middle school and youth wrestling programs. Hudson came to St. Christopher's after teaching and coaching at Hanover County's Oak Knoll Middle School where he developed an outstanding wrestling program. His 2007-08 OKMS team finished the season undefeated. Hudson is in charge of the middle school team at St. Christopher's. He has an incredible work ethic and dynamic personality! He wrestled under Coach Abbott during his high school days. Not only is Coach Hudson an outstanding coach, but he is a great workout and live wrestling partner. His enthusiasm and energy for the sport is second to none.

Steve Sica
Steve Sica starts his third year as an assistant coach at St. Christopher's.  He will work with Coach Hudson with the middle school and youth wrestling programs. From 2003-10 he was an assistant coach at his Alma mater, the Collegiate School. Sica was a two-time National Preps All-American and three-time VISAA State Champion for the Cougars, putting together one of the most successful careers of any Collegiate wrestler. He competed collegiately for Wesleyan University. Steve will work with the youth, middle school, JV, and varsity programs at St. Christopher's. Sica is an outstanding technician and personality on the mat.
